Adding the Popular Posts Widget for Blogger

Just click on your blog title, access the Layout menu, click "Add Widget" and choose "Popular Posts". A window will appear asking you to configure the widget by choosing which posts you'll feature (e.g. those that were most viewed in the past 7 days or 30 days or from the beginning of your blog). You'll also be asked to choose how many posts you'll feature in your Popular Posts section and select if you'll show the post title only or along with the image thumbnail and/or the snippet. (Remember that each widget style has different requirements, so follow the instructions carefully to know if you'll need the snippet and image thumbnail or not).

Configuring Popular Posts Widget for Blogger

Once you've followed these instructions, you'll get to see the basic version of the Popular Posts Widget for Blogger in your blog. You can stick with this if it matches your blog design but, if it sticks out like a sore thumb or doesn't suit your taste, there's no need to fret since you can personalize it. You can choose from the following styles - see the demo blog:

Popular Posts Style 1 - Box within a box

This is an interesting widget style since it uses your snippet and image thumbnail in a unique way. Your snippet is written in opaque text and placed in a small transparent box. This, in turn, is placed in a bigger rectangular box, wherein your image thumbnail is used as a background. Choosing this Popular Posts Widget for Blogger can be a great option if you want to brighten up your blog and grab the attention of readers with your colorful photos.

Popular Posts Style 2 - Large thumbnails with small post titles underneath

This uses the same code as the basic Blogger Popular Posts Widget with a few tweaks. Popularized by well-known blogs, this style is eye-catching because it focuses on pictures, which don't only summarize the posts' content but also add visual drama to the entire page. This is particularly useful for blogs that focus on clothes, makeup, art and other topics that highly depend on visual presentation to better express ideas.

Popular Posts Style 3 - Colorful boxes

If your blog needs a pop of color, this is the right choice for you. This widget style presents your Popular Posts in several boxes that feature a thumbnail image and have bright, eye-catching shades like light green, ocher yellow and vivid orange. Each box has a different color, and you can add up to four boxes.

Popular Posts Style 4 - Grid layout

Just like the large-picture widget style, the grid layout is an excellent option if you want to showcase your pictures or if your blog depends on visual information. However, the title of your posts won't be included in the layout, so readers will have to hover their mouses on the images to read the titles.

If you love numbered lists, or if you'd like to make your blog more organized, this can be the perfect option. By using the code for this widget style, your Popular Posts will be automatically numbered and will feature clean, minimalistic boxes that include your snippet and image thumbnail.

These are just some of the widget styles you can choose from. When you've picked a style you want, make sure to copy its CSS code. Once you do so, go to your blog, click "Template" on the left side and select "Edit HTML" under the template preview.

These next codes need to be pasted above the "
" or "
" tags, so check the instruction to know exactly where you need to put the code.

Adding the CSS

When the template editor has opened, click anywhere inside the code area and hit CTRL + F or Command F to search the following tag:

Just ABOVE the
tag, copy-paste the CSS code of one of the styles above.

Important: If the Popular Posts widget is located in the footer of your blog, remove the .sidebar class found in the CSS code in order to make it work.

Please note that most of the styles are using the Oswald font which you need to add to your template's code as well.

So, search for this tag:

Just BELOW it, add this line:

Adding the JavaScript

These styles also require JavaScript codes in order to resize the popular posts image / thumbnail and trim the post snippet and title. To add the JavaScript, search the
tag and paste the following script just above it:

Note: if you have already the jQuery library in your template, remove the line in red.

Once you have added all the codes in the right place, press the "Save template" button to save the changes.

That's it!

The five Popular Posts widgets for Blogger featured today are all great solutions for adding a popular post section to your blog. They all have different appearance for determining what makes a post popular, but the end result is the same: visitors are always one click away from your best content. Try some of these styles, find your favorite, and see how it impacts the performance of your blog.
LinkWithin is a very popular widget that shows the related posts with a thumbnail and although it is not a new gadget among bloggers, many avoid using it for its lack of customization. So, this tutorial will show you how to add LinkWithin on a Blogger blog and how to customize it.

This is what we will do with this gadget:
 • Change the location of the gadget;
 • Remove the LinkWithin link;
 • Change the "You might also like" title with any other text;
 • Add rounded borders to images;
 • Remove the border that separates posts;
 • Add a background color;
 • Change the background color on mouse over;
 • Change the post titles color and font

Adding the LinkWithin gadget to Blogger

First of all we need to install the LinkWithin gadget. For this, we have to go to the LinkWithin homepage and type in the required information:

linkwithin gadget, related posts widget, blogger widgets
Although it provides the option to choose Blogger as a platform, we will select Other in order to implement the code directly into our template and then modify it. Select the number of posts (stories) according to the width of the content area - if the width of the posts container is narrower, then it is recommended to display fewer related posts.

By clicking on the "Get widget!" button, we'll be given the code that we need use it. It should look something like this:

That's the basic code we need to copy. Now login into your Blogger account > select your blog to where you want to add the LinkWithin gadget and go to "Template" > click on the "Edit HTML" button:

Cick anywhere inside the code area and press the CTRL + F keys to search for the following line:

Just above this line, paste the LinkWithin code.

By doing so you already have the LinkWithin gadget on your blog and the result will be like this:

linkwithin gadget, related posts widget, blogger widgets
Note: If you would like to display it only in post pages, you can enclose the code using a Blogger conditional tag.

Change the LinkWithin gadget location

By default, this widget will always appear right at the end of your posts. In the LinkWithin FAQ page we can find solutions on how to fix this - simply add the code below where we want the widget to appear:

This will make the gadget to display right where we added the code. Even if we don't want to change the gadget location, this line is required so that we can customize it later.

Replacing the "You might also like" LinkWithin text

By default, the LinkWithin gadget shows the "You might also like" title but we can change the text to anything we want. Just add the line below in blue within the LinkWithin code:

And change the text - in this case, it will show "Related posts" instead of "You may also like these stories".

Changing the LinkWithin background color and thumbnails style

Within the template's code, search for the </b:skin> tag and just above it, add the following CSS styling:
.linkwithin_div {
background: #EEEEEE; /* Background color for the related posts container */
padding: 0 10px;
border-top: 1px solid #DBDBDB; /* Top border for the related posts container */
border-bottom: 1px solid #DBDBDB; /* Bottom border for the related posts container */
}
.linkwithin_text {
font-family: Cambria,Georgia,sans-serif;

color:#898989; /* Color for the related posts title */

After adding this CSS, the LinkWithin gadget will look like this:

linkwithin gadget, related posts widget, blogger widgets

If you don't want round thumbnails, remove the code in red. In green you can see the parts which can be customized - there you can apply more styles or change the background color, text size, etc.

After you've made the changes, click on the "Save Template" button. So this is how we can customize the LinkWithin related posts widget. Enjoy!
I have seen that many of those using toolbars such as Wibiya have had to remove it because of interfering with the performance of some scripts like Scriptaculous and Prototype, while others have chosen to remove these scripts just to continue using the toolbar.

Well, for those who prefer to have a custom toolbar that does not give them such problems and allow them to continue using other scripts, here's how to create our own floating toolbar with a close option.

The toolbar contains a search box, link for feed subscription, link to follow on Twitter and Facebook, like button to share on Twitter or Facebook and translator in five languages.

You can see it working in this demo blog.

Adding a Custom Sticky Toolbar on Blogger

Step 1. Login to your Blogger account > select your blog > click on the "Template" option on the left side

Step 2. Click on the Edit HTML button on the right side > click anywhere inside the code area and press CTRL + F keys to open the Blogger search box

Step 3. Paste or type the following tag inside the search box and hit Enter to find it:
</b:skin>
Step 4. Just above </b:skin> add the following CSS style:
#custom-toolbar {
overflow: auto;
position: fixed;
background: #1B1B1B url("https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXdgWaSSi4yrQs3Fs8OzzYiIbF3DF1M7fOUNo_rkbfMNmLSEAW62tY53mHgw593YF6VPmWILSROf8Mo2QQd-tWFkv4iFDDrGIdKQXjs6_n_Le75I-yASZQTyoE05mG5leoXPBrwD5wBQR1/s1600/pagelist.png") repeat-x scroll 0 bottom;
font: bold 13px/17px "Helvetica Neue",Helvetica,Arial,Geneva,sans-serif;
height: 33px;
margin: 0 auto;
width: 100%;
bottom:0px;
right:0;
}
.close-toolbar {
float: right;
margin-top:6px;
padding-right: 10px;
cursor: pointer;
}
.search-text {
color: #D1D1D1;
text-align: center;
border-radius: 10px;
}

.google_translate:hover img {
filter:alpha(opacity=0.90);
-moz-opacity: 0.90;
opacity: 0.90;
border:0;
}
Step 5. Now search for this tag:

Step 6. Just above the
tag add this script:

Step 6. Finally, look for this line:

Or if you use an old template of Blogger, search this line:

Step 7. Paste below one of these two lines, this code:

<b:section class='tabviewtab' id='Tab1' maxwidgets='1'/>
<b:section class='tabviewtab' id='Tab2' maxwidgets='1'/>
<b:section class='tabviewtab' id='Tab3' maxwidgets='1'/>

Step 8. Save changes, and go to Layout and there you will see the new areas to add gadgets.

You just have to click on Add a Gadget to add the gadget to the tab that corresponds, or drag a gadget you already have to that section.

If you want to add more tabs, then just add before the last
a line like this:

<b:section class='tabviewtab' id='Tab4' maxwidgets='1'/>

Note that each line you add should have a different ID, for example Tab5, Tab6, etc..

You can add multiple tabs, just repeat the last step and likewise remember to change the name of the IDs.

Remember that if your sidebar is too narrow, then you should not put a lot of tabs, or tab titles that are very long.
You should also note that this gadget does not speed up the loading speed of the blog, is only to group gadgets into one, even, depending on the blog-may take a while to load the tabview.
